The purpose of the Tennessee Commission of Indian Affairs is to deal fairly and effectively with Indian Affairs; to bring local, state and federal resources into focus for the implementation or continuation of meaningful programs for Indian citizens as needs are demonstrated; and to prevent undue hardships.  The Commission also works to assist Indian communities in social and economic development and to promote recognition of the right of Indians to pursue cultural and religious traditions considered by them to be sacred and meaningful.

The Commission has the authority to approve applications for recognition as Native Americans for individuals and organizations in Tennessee.

The Commission meets quarterly and is comprised of five members appointed by the Governor.
