TVA Cultural Resources Native AmericansTVA Cultural Resources consults with 18 federally recognized Native American tribes that have a cultural and historical interest in the Tennessee Valley (see list below). These tribes are consulted on projects that involve the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (see laws). It’s important for us to work closely with these tribes and consider their viewpoints regarding TVA’s management and protection of Native American archaeological sites, artifacts, human remains, and traditional cultural places. In May 2002 TVA’s Cultural Resources staff met with representatives of several tribes to work on ways to improve the consultation process, and we continue to build on ideas presented at that workshop. You may learn more about these tribes by visiting their Web sites: Cherokee Chickasaw Choctaw Creek Seminole Shawnee
